Canis Computer Laboratories: Building the Baseline for Health 2.0

A leading lab for AI in healthcare, and the research and engineering arm behind CCL Billing. We build AI-native healthcare systems — the Cannect™ EHR, the Canis AI Wolfware family of healthcare models, and the training environments that will develop the next generation of healthcare AI — and we run the billing operation that proves them every day.

What We Mean by Health 2.0

Health 2.0 is our shorthand for healthcare whose systems were built around AI from the first line of code, not retrofitted with plug-ins. The clinician documents, codes, bills, and communicates inside one system that understands the encounter as it happens. Every AI decision is logged with the model that produced it and approved by a human. Protected health information never leaves the security perimeter to be processed somewhere else.

The baseline is the infrastructure that makes that possible: an AI-native record, models trained for healthcare work, and environments where those models learn the job before they touch a patient’s chart. That baseline is what this lab builds, and what CCL Billing runs on.

Three Programs, One Baseline

AI-native EHR icon

AI-Native EHR: Cannect™

An electronic health record and practice-management system designed around the encounter and the claim: zero-search chart open, AI note completion, denial-risk scoring before submission, downtime resilience, and FHIR R4 and SMART on FHIR interoperability.

Healthcare models icon

Healthcare Models: Canis AI Wolfware

A family of in-house models for physician assistance, documentation management, and revenue cycle operations, trained and governed by the lab and exercised daily inside a working billing company.

Training environments icon

Training Environments & Data Systems

Simulated practice systems with synthetic patients, real payer rules, and real workflows, where models learn to document, code, submit, appeal, and reconcile, graded by people who do the work. Managed data use, with no PHI in training.

How the Lab Works

Operations icon

Built Inside Operations

Every system the lab ships is used first by CCL Billing’s own team on real claims and real payer behavior. Nothing reaches a client that has not survived our own work queue.

Decision records icon

Decision Records

Each AI suggestion is written to a decision record with the model that produced it and what the human accepted or changed. A compliance officer can reconstruct any recommendation.

Human approval icon

Human Approval

Models draft, score, and suggest. A credentialed person approves every irreversible clinical or financial action. No automated submission, no automated signing.

PHI perimeter icon

PHI Stays Inside the Perimeter

Models run behind per-practice credentials. Provider keys never ship to customer systems, and protected health information is never sent to a third party for processing.

Synthetic data icon

Synthetic and De-Identified Data

Training uses synthetic encounters by default and de-identified data only under Expert Determination with the practice’s written authorization. We never sell patient data.

Interoperability icon

FHIR-First

Clinical data moves over FHIR R4 and SMART on FHIR; the revenue cycle runs on 270/271, 837, and 835 transactions. Open standards, so your data is never trapped.

Work With the Lab

EHR development icon

AI-Native EHR Development

Deployment and configuration of Cannect™ for your practice or group, custom modules on the platform, integration with your existing systems, and the Wolfware models inside your workflow.

Data systems icon

Healthcare Data & AI Systems

Claims and clinical data pipelines, de-identification, analytics, model development with evaluation harnesses, and training environments for teams building healthcare AI.

Communications icon

AI-Powered Communications

The lab’s VoIP and communications platform for healthcare organizations: intelligent routing, transcription, and automated post-call documentation.

Billing icon

Medical Billing & Revenue Cycle Management

The operating company. Billing, denial appeals, aging A/R recovery, and monthly reporting for practices across New York and the United States, powered by the lab’s systems.

The Lab at a Glance

Canis Computer Laboratories was founded in Albany, New York in 2018 by William Hyatt, a Columbia University graduate and PhD candidate with a background in scientific computing, network security, and systems development. The company operates as CCL Billing, Inc., with its office at 99 Washington Avenue in downtown Albany, serving practices across the Capital Region, New York State, and the country.

We think a leading lab for AI in healthcare should be judged on two things: what it ships, and what it refuses to do. We ship an AI-native EHR that clinicians use, models that billers rely on, and reporting a practice can verify. We refuse to let a model act without a human, to move PHI outside the perimeter, or to train on patient data that was never meant for it. The practices and patients who work with us are the measure of whether that balance is right.

Our published work on the architecture behind this approach: What Is an AI-Native EHR?, AI-Native EHR Platforms Compared (2026), and the native AI acceleration inside Cannect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Canis Computer Laboratories?

Canis Computer Laboratories is a healthcare AI lab founded in Albany, New York in 2018. It builds AI-native healthcare systems — the Cannect™ electronic health record, the Canis AI Wolfware family of healthcare models, and training environments for healthcare AI — and it operates CCL Billing, Inc., the medical billing and revenue cycle management company that runs on those systems every day.

What does “building the baseline for Health 2.0” mean?

Health 2.0 is our term for healthcare whose systems are built around AI from the first line of code rather than retrofitted with plug-ins: one system that understands the encounter as it happens, every AI decision logged and approved by a human, and protected health information that never leaves the security perimeter. The baseline is the infrastructure that makes it possible: an AI-native record, models trained for healthcare work, and environments where those models learn the job. That is what the lab builds.

Is Canis Computer Laboratories the same company as CCL Billing?

Yes. Canis Computer Laboratories is the research and engineering identity; CCL Billing, Inc. is the operating billing company. Same team, same Albany office, one legal entity. The billing operation is where the lab’s systems are proven on real payer behavior before anyone else relies on them.

What is Wolfware?

Wolfware is the name of the Canis AI model family: in-house healthcare models spanning physician assistance in the encounter, documentation management, and revenue cycle operations. The models run inside Cannect™ and inside CCL Billing’s operations, with every recommendation logged to a decision record and approved by a human. Read about the Wolfware family.

Can other organizations work with the lab?

Yes. The lab builds for practices, specialty groups, and health-technology companies through two services: AI-native EHR development on the Cannect platform, and healthcare data and AI systems development, including training environments for teams developing healthcare models. Start with a conversation about what you are trying to build.

Build the Baseline With Us

Whether you run a practice that needs an AI-native system, a health-technology company that needs one built, or a team developing healthcare models that need somewhere to learn the job, start with a conversation.
